The Oxnard boys’ basketball team might not have the most impressive record at 10-8, but sometimes numbers can be deceiving. See, a tough nonleague schedule, one without any of those cupcake opponents, was designed so the team would be better prepared once Pacific View League play started. The results: Let’s just say, so far, so good.
The Yellowjackets enter tonight’s showdown at Rio Mesa alone atop the league standings, with a chance to extend their lead to, get this, two games with six left in the regular season. Two games against Hueneme (2-9) loom for Oxnard, and beyond that, the only team remaining to be played with a winning record is Channel Islands.
Guess the back-to-back losses to Hart and Westlake to open the season weren’t so bad after all. The setbacks to Ventura and Oaks Christian in mid-December, along with the loss to Palisades two weeks ago, are a distant memory. Oxnard is battle-tested and figures to prove as much against the Spartans and the rest of the league.
