Trust in state government is weakest closest to Capitol

When it comes to trusting California state government, it seems like distance may make the heart grow fonder, according to a new survey.

Los Angeles-area residents have the most faith in their state government, with 65% saying they trust the governor, lawmakers and other officials to make the right decisions.

However, just 42% of Sacramento-area residents have similar faith.

The findings are from a survey released Wednesday morning by Edelman, a public relations company. One thousand Californians participated in the online survey, which was conducted last fall.

‘The closer respondents lived to the capital, the less trust they appeared to have in state government,’ said a statement from Steve Telliano, a managing director at Edelman. ‘It appears that having more firsthand knowledge of our state government’s day-to-day operations had a negative correlation to trust.”

Overall, 56% of Californians said they trust state government.
