County probation executive Carl Washington to plead guilty to fraud

A Los Angeles County probation executive and former state legislator has agreed to plead guilty to fraud charges, authorities said Monday.

Carl Edward Washington, 47, was arrested last fall for allegedly defrauding Farmers and Merchants Bank, First City Credit Union and L.A. Financial Credit Union of about $190,000 by claiming to be a victim of identity theft.

Washington, who was elected three times to the state Assembly and was an aide to retired Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, agreed to plea guilty to three counts of bank fraud. Under the agreement, which still must be approved by a judge, Washington will serve up to 18 months in federal prison.

Washington is a division chief of intergovernmental relations for the Probation Department. He was placed on unpaid leave after his arrest.

Probation officials said they will begin the process of firing Washington once his plea is accepted.
