As former ‘American Idol’ winner Fantasia settles in this week at the Pantages Theatre for a limited run of the musical ‘The Color Purple,’ another ‘Fantasia’ is taking up residence several blocks away on Hollywood Boulevard.
Disney’s ‘Fantasia 2000’ is set to open at the El Capitan Theatre on Wednesday. The animated film, which originally debuted in cinemas 10 years ago, is a sequel to the 1940 classic ‘Fantasia.’
Like the first film, ‘Fantasia 2000’ features short animated segments that are set to well-known classical music pieces. Among the works on the soundtrack are Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird Suite’ and Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 5.’
The music for the film was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor James Levine.
In addition, the film reprises ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ segment, featuring Mickey Mouse, from the first film.
At the El Capitan, “Fantasia 2000” will be accompanied by the short animated film “Destino,” a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali, which was begun in 1945.
‘Fantasia 2000’ is set to run from Feb. 17 to 27. The engagement is dedicated to the late Roy Edward Disney, who died in December.
Meanwhile, ‘The Color Purple,’ starring Fantasia Barrino, is set to end its run at the Pantages on Feb. 28.
