August Coppola, the father of actor Nicolas Cage and brother of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, and a former literature professor, died Oct. 27 of a heart attack, Cage’s publicist Annett Wolf said today. He was 75.
A graduate of UCLA who had a doctorate from Occidental College, Coppola taught literature and had been the dean of creative arts at San Francisco State.
He moved to Savannah, Ga., in the 1990s because he said he needed to find a quiet place to write.
